Yuriko Nishikawa

西川由里子（1996年、日本生まれ）は、東京を拠点に活動するアーティストです。栃木県足利市で生まれたあと、親の転勤の影響で幼少期から大人になるまでを鹿児島県いちき串木野市・千葉県我孫子市・神奈川県相模原市で育ちました。現在は東京にアトリエを構え制作を行い、日本国内だけでなく韓国や台湾など東アジアでも発表を重ねています。

写真、染色、縫製などを横断する彼女の多様な実践は、いずれも絵画が内包する「空間性」を物質的に解体・再構成するためのアプローチとして位置づけられます。これらの領域を横断する制作を通じて、物質性、知覚、そして空間体験の相互関係を探究しています。

彼女の作品は、空気、光、時間の堆積といった目に見えない現象を可視化することを試みています。絵画のモチーフをあえて伝統的な「瓶」と「リンゴ」に限定し、それらが持つ時代を超えた普遍性を通じて、現代における絵画のあり方とその現在性を批評的に問い直しています。これらの身近な対象を通して、人類が異なる時代や文化の中で、光や空間をいかに色彩によって表現してきたのかという「知覚の歴史的変遷」にも目を向けています。

西川は、絵画作品そのものだけでなく、そこに至る重層的な制作プロセスをも空間インスタレーションとして提示しています。彼女にとって空間インスタレーションとは、作品が展示される国や地域、そしてその場所に根付く固有の文化や価値観によって深く形づくられる、開かれた対話の場です。

近年、東アジアで開催された海外アートフェアへの参加を通じて、展示空間の文脈や、異なる歴史的・社会的条件によって作品がいかに変容するのかという問題に強い関心を寄せるようになりました。こうした批評的な視点から、従来の絵画の枠組みを拡張する「キュレーター的思考」を取り入れ、新たな知覚を喚起する空間の創出を試みています。

日本で培ってきた繊細な物質的感性を基盤としながら、国内外の多様な視点や言説との対話を模索し、物質的な実験と概念的な探究を連続的かつ相互に結びつけながら、現代絵画の新たな可能性を追究しています。

Yuriko Nishikawa (b. 1996, Japan) is an artist based in Tokyo. Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses photography, dyeing, and sewing, all of which serve as approaches to materially deconstructing and reconstructing the inherent spatiality of painting. Through this cross-disciplinary practice, she explores the interrelationship between materiality, perception, and spatial experience.

Her works attempt to visualize invisible phenomena such as air, light, and the accumulation of time. She deliberately limits the motifs in her paintings to the traditional subjects of bottles and apples, using their timeless universality to critically reconsider the present condition of painting and its contemporaneity. Through these familiar objects, she reflects on the historical evolution of perception—how humanity has represented light and space through color across different periods and cultures.

Nishikawa presents her painting and multilayered production processes themselves as forms of spatial installation. For her, spatial installation serves as an open site of dialogue, one that is deeply shaped by the country or region in which it is exhibited, as well as by the unique cultures and values embedded within each context.

In recent years, her participation in international art fairs across East Asia has heightened her interest in how artworks transform in response to the context of exhibition spaces and to differing historical and social conditions. From this critical perspective, she incorporates a form of curatorial thinking that expands the conventional framework of painting, seeking to create spaces that evoke new modes of perception.

Grounded in the refined material sensibility cultivated in Japan, Nishikawa continues to engage in dialogue with diverse perspectives and discourses both within Japan and internationally. Her practice develops a contemporary approach to painting in which material experimentation and conceptual inquiry are pursued as a continuous and interconnected process.
